Australian police have called off the search for a four-year-old who has been lost in the wilderness for approximately three weeks, after renewed attempts failed to find any evidence of the child.
The young boy was spotted engaging around his home on a secluded farmland close to Yunta, about 300km from Adelaide, on late September.
His family member left him alone for about a short period before looking for him, only to discover the boy nowhere to be found, triggering one of the largest land and air searches in South Australian history.
Police - who do not believe criminal activity - say they will continue investigating, but that the situation has become a "recovery operation".
Last week, police for a short time wound down the operation, only to restart it on Tuesday alongside eighty military personnel.
"Official Grant Stevens said police were looking a more extensive region based on updated assessments from survivability and search professionals, rather than any recent developments."
On the end of last week, officials announced that the recent operation had not discovered any traces of the child.
"The situation that the child is a small child, the terrain is very rough, unforgiving and affected by unpredictable elements has made the operation demanding and more challenging for those engaged," officials said in a release.
About a vast area - an area about double the size of urban center - has now been searched, and a twelve-member team set up lately is projected to continue investigating. Officials have not excluded more searches of the location in the time ahead.
Gus, who has been characterized as an adventurous but quiet youngster, was spotted wearing a dark hat, light grey pants, footwear and a navy full-sleeve shirt featuring a yellow character character.
The situation has provoked significant concern across Australia, with photographs of the fair-haired, curly-haired youngster featured throughout local media and speculation spreading widely online.
It led officials to ask that citizens discontinue phoning them with their "theories", and appeal for them to source information from credible places.
Police recently said the youngster's relatives remain "resilient" despite the heartbreaking circumstances.
"You can imagine just how they are experiencing... without having clarity as to specifically where the boy is and what's occurred to him. This would be traumatic for any families," Official the commissioner said.
By means of a representative, the relatives family has before said they are "devastated" by Gus's loss.
"This represents a shock to our household and acquaintances, and we are having trouble to process what has happened," the spokesperson said.
"Their son's disappearance is noticed in all of us, and we miss him beyond expressions can describe."
