Three members of law enforcement perished and at least 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.
The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the residence in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an removal notice for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
All three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.
Two individuals got detained at the location and another man who ran away subsequent to the blast was apprehended not long after. All three have been transported to hospital.
The detonation could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the scene revealed the property turned into a heap of debris.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, explained the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to debts accumulated by the siblings.
Mediators had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had secured themselves into the home. When the officers came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect a family member caused the detonation.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Claudio Papagno told reporters.
A propane tank had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he explained.
Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the minister said.
Injured individuals by the blast consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had no electricity.
He believed the detonation had occurred on a level above the access point and stated to reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the explosion, he revealed officers had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being turned on”.
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants informed local news, noting that the three had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the three men who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
