Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of heroes, and a gripping narrative showcasing celestial beings, demons, and dark forces expanding in power within the city.

Note: Spoilers for the latest installment of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

Episode 3 concluded with a dramatic pause and presented the premier party of heroes who will separate from the main group to undertake their separate journey, separate from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team features Teor (portrayed by Travis), Thimble (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), the cleric (the player), and Kattigan (the actor).

Dividing the Cast

Given a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that having everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

This explains, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Overture, intertwining the personal journeys before dividing into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Schemers, and Questers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

Per the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for participants who prefer a typically action-packed battle-oriented narrative style where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Initially, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might look out of place, but the events of the third episode make it clear why these five characters are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to head next after a brutal first encounter with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose demise started the campaign’s events—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, breaking into the secret base, attacking the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The traitor then cleared his liabilities and ran away to a secure base in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each member has a personal reason to depart the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, desires revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the region and advises that it is a hostile location.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to kill the target and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their status as key figures in the influential clan could help the group access locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, Teor pledged a eternal obligation to Wicander for his deliverance and will now go with him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

In addition, all of them are sought by the authorities that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • Thimble and The hero are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and Wicander defied House Halovar and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the clan.

This means them little choice but to head to the northern region in search of the traitor.

Future Episodes

Based on the recent installment’s Cooldown, we find out that the Soldiers table will be absent next week, leaving the rest of the participants to form the Seekers and Schemers parties.

Fans can anticipate learning which adventurers will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
