Major Web Failure Impacts Numerous Sites and Mobile Apps

An extensive web failure has disrupted dozens online platforms and apps worldwide, and users reporting problems getting online after problems at Amazon’s online infrastructure system.

The affected platforms include Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with multiple Amazon-operated services such as its main retail site and the Ring doorbell home security firm.

In the UK, Lloyds bank was impacted along with its affiliates Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were additional accounts of issues using the the tax authority website on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring customers took to online platforms to report their doorbells were failing.

In the UK alone, reports of issues on specific platforms ran into the thousands for each app.

Officials confirmed that the outage originated in the eastern region of the America at the cloud division, a section that supplies essential web infrastructure for a host of businesses, who utilize resources on the company's servers. AWS is the most extensive online services system.

Soon after late night (PDT) in the United States (8 in the morning BST), the company announced “higher problem frequencies and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a region on the east coast of the United States. The ripple effect appeared to disrupt apps around the world, and the outage tracking website showing issues with the same sites in various regions.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that reports on web disruptions, additionally noted a rise in outages on the start of the week, and numerous instances located in Virginia, the region of the AWS US-East-1 zone where the company stated the problems began.
