A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
