Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
